COASTAL SAFETY PROTOCOL & MADEIRA TIDE GATES11 MONITORED SPOTS

Official Island Tide Gate Matrix, Entry Channels & Exit Rules

Across Madeira's volcanic boulder pointbreaks and reef passes, ocean safety strictly depends on respecting spot-specific tide gate thresholds for rocky entries, seawall ramps, and natural entry channels. Always calculate paddle-in margins before gates close.

TACTICAL SAFETY DIRECTIVES FOR MADEIRA REEFS

1. EXIT MARGIN TIMING

Never Push Past Peak Waterline

At spots like Contreiras and Ponta Pequena, maintain at least a 40-minute exit buffer before high tide to paddle through the rock channel and scramble over boulders.

2. SEAWALL BACKWASH

Paul do Mar (< 1.58m)

Above 1.58m, sets rebound directly off the concrete seawall, creating explosive backwash that destroys wave structure and prevents safe ramp access.

3. SAFE ENTRY & EXIT CHANNELS

Fajã da Areia (0.78m–1.62m)

Spot the natural entry channel from the clifftop before entering. At Fajã da Areia, the boat ramp channel provides safe water depth strictly between 0.78m and 1.62m.

4. MARITIME RESCUE

MRCC Funchal / Coastguard

In case of offshore distress or flooded cliff trail: broadcast on VHF Channel 16 or call 112 / Capitania do Porto do Funchal (+351 291 213 110).
